The Balkans, or the Balkan Peninsula, is a geographic area in Eastern and Southeastern Europe with various and disputed borders. The region takes its name from the Balkan Mountains that stretch from the Serbian-Bulgarian border to the Black Sea.

States belonging to the the Balkan Peninsula are Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro and the Kosovo.
The state territories of Serbia, Croatia, Romania, Slovenia and Turkey are only partially located within the Balkan Peninsula.
